Media Reflection 5

After completing our final project, there were a number of things that I reflected on in relation to the process that we went through in creating the film. One of the first things that I reflected on was the different ways that different groups were represented in our project. When we first started planning our film, we didn’t think a lot about the different ways that different groups might be represented in our movie. After reflecting on our completed movie, though, it was clear that our movie does include some different groups. One of these is ethnicity. In our movie, the people that played the parts of Abel, Cheryl, and Abel's son are all Hispanic. They are not shown in a negative or stereotypical way in the movie. This was actually a good thing because the child in our movie does look like he could be the son of the people that played his parents.

Another group that is depicted in our film is those who live with chronic or terminal diseases. This is a sensitive subject for people who have lived through similar circumstances or who have a family member who is going through a tough time. As a result of this, we tried our best to handle the subject in a delicate manner. In our film, we do not reveal what type of illness Cheryl is suffering from. Instead, we reveal some symptoms that show she has probably been diagnosed with a serious condition. We chose to do this since it would have taken a lot of time researching and also to avoid misrepresenting a certain illness. The other reason for doing this was that we wanted to maintain our focus.

The other idea that I reflected on was how my media consumption habits contributed to the nature of our film. The idea that we developed is based on a memory of a relationship that is filled with loss following the death of one of the individuals in the relationship early in our story. This is comparable to the opening scene of the movie Up, where early in the movie, we see a scene of a married couple living together before the wife dies. While our story was not based on this movie, it was definitely inspired by it, particularly when we decided to create a scene of a relationship developing quickly through a montage before we introduced the loss that fills our movie. My media consumption habits are mostly filled with drama and romance movies, which is likely why our group decided to create a drama movie for this project. While we could have easily decided to create a different genre of movie, we would have had to do a lot of research on that genre, but since everyone in our group was comfortable with drama movies, we decided to create something we already knew well.

Throughout the entire project, a variety of different skills were utilized. Personally speaking, I did not necessarily learn new skills, but I was able to enhance the skills that I had. Throughout the entire project, I had the roles of a director, an actor, a location manager, and a mise en scene manager. This helped me with the entire project because it allowed me to determine the storyline of the movie, how each scene should be performed, and how I should act to convey the right message to the audience.

Overall, I feel that this project has positively changed my outlook on media. I feel that I have a greater appreciation for the production of movies, even though our production was on a small scale, it still took a lot of planning and coordination. I feel that I am more aware of how movies are made, and I look for things like camera angles, editing, and symbolism in movies more than I used to. I feel that taking this course has been a valuable experience, and I feel that I will be able to apply what I have learned in this course in my future life.
